Young Leaders Society: Operation Volunteerism

As young professionals, we have so many competing priorities. From work, family, friends, professional associations, happy hours, and fitness classes, sometimes it’s hard to understand where time really goes. But there is one way of spending time that can be truly meaningful to your own personal growth, and community; and that’s volunteering.

Last year, Americans volunteered nearly 7.7 billion hours, with a growing portion of those hours coming from volunteers between the ages of 21-40.There is no doubt that young professionals are making a huge impact in the philanthropic world, including members of the United Way Young Leaders Societies (YLS). With more than 50,000 members across the United States, YLS are transforming lives and changing communities.

Often, it’s easy to say “I’m too busy” to volunteer. But with hundreds of nonprofit organizations in the greater Sacramento region, you’ll find that whatever your interest, your passion, or your schedule, there is a volunteer opportunity that is right for you. Whether it is a one-time volunteer project cleaning up a local park, an opportunity tutoring students for an hour a week, or lending your expertise to a nonprofit board or committee, volunteering is a rewarding experience.

At “Operation Volunteerism,” the Emerge Summit breakout session hosted by United Way’s Young Leaders Society, we’ll help you find the perfect volunteer match for your passion and your schedule. You’ll hear from five nonprofit organizations, and get to mingle and learn more at our session’s volunteer fair. “Owning Our Community” starts with YPs who are willing to get their hands dirty, and dive right in to important work being done by nonprofit organizations every day. If you don’t act to make our region a better place for all, who else will?

So carve out some time in your schedule to volunteer. Let’s make Sacramento one of the most active, community-focused regions. And let’s lead the way as proud YPs.
