FAME – Sonal Dutt

FAME is a quick interview where we introduce you to fellow EDGErs and give you a glimpse into their professional lives and personalities. Sonal has been a member of Metro EDGE since January 2020 and served on the Communications Committee as the Linkedin Channel Owner. Reach out and say hi!

Where do you currently work, how long have you been there, and what do you do?

I work at VSP, or Vision Service Plan, as a communications specialist in the Digital Marketing Department where I manage social media strategy and create content for our digital channels. I also have a business on the side where I help entrepreneurs with social media marketing for their businesses.

Prior to that?

I was a communications specialist for a different team at VSP. While the positions have the same name, the responsibilities are completely different. In that position, I was responsible for managing internal communications, specifically for our sales teams across the enterprise.

What is your educational background?

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in marketing and a minor in communications from Sacramento State University. Stingers up!

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job would definitely be the people! In my two and a half years at VSP, I've had the opportunity to work with so many talented and passionate individuals who genuinely care about the success of the company and supporting private practice doctors. I'm always learning something new from each person I work with.

What do you love about living in Sacramento?

I was born and raised in Sacramento so for me, it's home. Growing up here, it's been great to see the city grow and change over the years. My favorite part about living here is the diversity in both the people and environment. . Sacramento is one of those unique places that can feel like a big city, without losing the feeling of a close knit community that you might find in a small town. It's the best of both worlds!

What is one thing that might surprise people about you?

People are often surprised that most of my family is from the Fiji Islands. Family vacations are always a treat when you're in paradise!

When you aren't in the office, where can we find you?

Pre-COVID, you could find me exploring new restaurants, bars, and coffee shops in midtown and downtown. Nowadays, I've been spending more time outdoors either hiking or heading to the coast for a beach day.

What advice can you offer a young professional looking for a similar job/career path as you?

My advice to anyone wanting to work in the marketing or communications space is to first, narrow down what area you are interested in specifically, and second, seek opportunities to build a portfolio. Once you've figured out what you're passionate about, I would recommend taking online courses and networking with others in that field to further your knowledge. Volunteer work and freelancing are great ways to get started!

How has Metro EDGE enhanced your resume?

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as a channel owner this year on the Metro EDGE Communications Committee. During my time as the Linkedin channel owner, I got first hand experience in social media marketing and content creation, which led me to land a job in social media shortly after at VSP. I'm also glad I had the opportunity to build connections with like-minded young professionals through several networking events, especially the Emerge Summit. Metro EDGE has truly helped open the door to a new community in Sacramento and presented endless opportunities to give back to the city I call home.
