Engaging in Our Community

Continuing in our series of Vice Chair "guest blogs" is Alex J. Sioukas, valiant leader of the Regional Action Committee. Enjoy…
Regional Action is what Metro EDGE is all about. The Regional Action Committee engages our members to roll up our collective sleeves and work on the big issues affecting our local communities and our entire region.
We kicked off the fall with the Hands on Sacramento Day at Soil Born Farms. Soil Born Farms is an Urban Agriculture Project that teaches our local youth and residents about food production and fresh produce first hand and also delivers healthy organic food to our community.
Going forward our group is planning quarterly “Green Crawls” in the Sacramento Region starting in early 2010. The Green Crawls will focus on using Regional Transit’s Light Rail and Bus system (RT) to visit sustainable and LEED certified buildings and businesses in our region. Stay tuned for details on the first Green Crawl.
We are also working with the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency, which is building and upgrading the entire flood protection system in our region. It’s a huge effort and we all want to be a part of it. Another major effort we are joining is the Greenprint project of the Sacramento Tree Foundation, which is working on its ambitious plan to add 5 million trees to our region!
Plain and simple, if we want to learn about our region, sustainability, smart growth, flood prevention, etc… then let’s all pitch in. We can all plant trees for shade and carbon sequestration. We can all support local businesses and save jobs. We can all use and incorporate public transportation in our lives. As a group, we can accomplish so much. It is time to get involved.
