Educate Yourself & Take Action

Continuing in our series of Vice Chair "guest blogs" is Matt Post, fearless leader of the Professional Development Committee. Enjoy…
The general mission of the Professional Development Committee is to provide EDGE members access to information relevant to their personal and professional lives with a platform for meaningful conversation with regional leaders and an opportunity to contribute to our community as business and civic leaders.
Our Committee is very cognizant of the fact that actions speak louder than words. The first step in affecting change is educating yourself on issues that affect the way you live.
Just think--Where are available jobs in our region? What is the Strong Mayor Initiative? Is there really a flood risk? How do stimulus dollars affect me? What do we do about K Street? How is the region supporting the arts and civic improvement? We hope to explore all these issues and more.
The second step in affecting change is to take action to improve your way of life. We work closely with the other EDGE committees, especially the Regional Action Committee, in our attempt to accomplish both of these goals.
We are organizing a variety of events that address current local issues that are relevant to young professionals in the Sacramento region. Some of our events will be structured as open forum discussions where all attendees have an opportunity to participate. Others will be structured as lectures or panel discussions and others may take the shape of a small group that meets on a reoccurring basis to discuss a single topic. We also have plans to allow members to host informational workshops for other members.
There is no other organization in the Sacramento region quite like Metro EDGE. My hope is that as we continue to grow, young professionals will look to Metro EDGE as a reliable resource for current information and relevant opportunities. Already through this program I have developed lasting friendships and made business connections. My hope is that many of you will find the same value in Metro EDGE that I do.
